Sunny days!!

The last two days I have spent fishing with a Father and Daughter combo. They are great people to have in the boat. Very pleasant, and very easy to fish with.

Here are some pics from the last two days with them in front of the Yakutat Lodge, and also a couple of pics with the whole group, including the son and son in-law.

No sign of the sun, but the rain has let up.

Today was the best day for weather in about 4 days. The rain was more speratic, and the wind laid down. River levels went up last night, but they have started to recieed as the day went on. The Fishing on the other hand has been great. Another push of fresh fish has hit the system in the last couple of days, and they are on the bite. Still using the black jigs has been the most successful way to get these bright fish. After stopping in the first hole and coming up empty, we headed down to another hole that yielded 3 nice bright fish. We then continued on down the river to a spot I really like. This hole is back behind a log. When hooking a fish in this hole, you have to take control quickly, or the fish will go under the log, and snap on in seconds. As soon as the hook up happens, you have to bring the fish to the top and hold him there. When you get their head above the water, they will thrash and wear themselves out fairly quickly. After you have accomplished this, then you just have bring the fish up the log, then the netter has to been quick, before the fish turns and goes under the log. When it all works out though, the fisherman has the braggin' rights for the day. Only one of six fish are ever even brought close enough to the net to even have a chance at them. So with that said, here is the pic of the fish that came out from behind the log. He landed one of three, "Not to shabby".

Rain is back

Well the rain and wind have returned to the river. The water levels are due to rise again tomorrow, and the fish will be on the move again. The fishing today, was great though. We stopped in the same hole that I have been fishing for the last week, and got a nice one in just minutes. A few moments later we had our second fish. We fished and hooked another 2 or 3 fish, that were able to spit the hook. So we moved on down to the second place I have been fishing, and took care of business real quick!!. After getting our limit of 2 fish per client, we set on down the river to try some fly fishing in the lower section. Then the rain and wind kicked up real good. The fly fisherman in the boat just said "Forget it, I will try another day!". With that, we got on down the river, and pulled out just about 11:30. It was a wet day, but a successful day. Here the pics of the fish from today.

Silvers are still coming

Well there are some days in Yakutat, that are just plain beautiful. Today was one of those days. The sun was out, and skies stayed clear through out the day. Most important of all, the fishing was great. For the last 5 days I have been fishing 2 holes, and picking up limits before the second hole is worn out. It has been real good fishing. The Silvers are still hitting good, and coming up the river in good numbers. The commercial netting season on the Situk is also yielding good numbers of fish. The rain is due back tomorrow, so we will see what happens. Here are some fish from today. Also some pics of Matt, another guide here at the lodge. He worked hard for this fish, chasing it down river about 150 yards, through stumps and snags, he was able to get the boat in the right place and get this large Silver to the bank without incident. Great job by a great guide. Way to go Matt!!
